MAGNESIUM SULFATE HEPTAHYDRATE AS PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL IN DOUBLE SLOPE SOLAR STILL

Solar still is best choice of utilizing freely available solar thermal energy to purify/desalinate muddy water. The driving force for this work the inadequate availability clean fresh water sources and plenty contaminated probable conversion into potable Among various designs available, double basin passive looks attractive applications in prone remote areas. This presents experimental characterization slope using phase change materials. aims improve performance (productivity water) Mg2SO4.7H2O as material (PCM). Different tests were conducted varying mass PCM. For experimentation, two identical stills (basin area 0.5×0.5 m2) designed, fabricated tested freshwater productivity. One (without PCM) second with material. A depth 5 cm was constant throughout experimentation under climate conditions Jabalpur (23° 10' N, 79° 59'E), Madhya Pradesh India. results obtained indicate that daily distillate Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate higher compared without convective heat transfer coefficient increases during discharging period PCM productivity 1400, 1420 & 1400 ml/m2/day Mg2SO4.7H2O), while 1800, 1900 1960 ml/m2day (with recorded addition 0.5, 0.75 1kg respectively. overall efficiency observed be 64%, a PCM, it 47% other kept constant.
